“The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it? It's the next one. Always the next step...".
- Brandon Sanderson, from Oathbringer
Hi! Welcome to kwyx&, my project that I hope to turn into a collection of fun, original content from across a number of interests I want to explore. I've always felt like I was a "jack-of-all-trades" kind of person; let's put it to the test and see what I can come up with!
The quote above is from the latest in a series of books entitled The Stormlight Archive. I started reading it this year, and it has quickly become one of my favorite series; after a years-long hiatus from reading fiction (or reading at all really), I devoured all three available books in the span of just two months. I'm hoping to do a few posts about those books soon, both to discuss their content and storytelling strengths, but also as a tribute to them - they, among other things, have recently inspired me to break down mental barriers that were holding me back for a long time.
I've always been one to make plans. Detailed diagrams of ideas I had and how I would bring them to the forefront and make them the Next Big Thing™ And it's good to make plans! It keeps you organized and gives you a clear path to achieving your goals. I won't contest that.
What isn't so good is allowing yourself to be chained by those plans, or worse, beguiled by them. I feel fantastic when I make a checklist, and I usually end up putting simpler things up top, especially things that are vague enough that I need to complete them to even form the rest of the checklist. This site was a prime example: I spent months with a to-do list about this site that was basically just "find a blogging tool you think would be best".
I won't lie, I do think that was an important step that needed to be done well, so as to not waste time with infrastructure, time that could be spent actually creating content. But it's not a step that needs to be done perfectly...there were tons of tools out there, and all of them allowed you to do some crazy stuff. Spending time "researching" them made me feel like I was working toward my goal and making sure I had some sort of crazy solid foundation that was going to propel me to some sort of acclaim.
If I could just get the first step perfect.
But that's never how it is! If you're playing basketball, you might execute the most flawless play of all time, one that will go down in history for decades to come. But the most you can get out of that will always be only four points. You still have to run back down the court and defend, and do it all over again, play after play after play until the game is won.
Persistence beats perfection, every time.
So here's to my inaugural post, the first of many to come. I'm not always sure what I'll talk about, but I know I'll always put my heart and soul into the content I make.
Here's to being consistent and persistent - not letting any win get me too high or any loss get me too low.
Here's to the first step. I've finally taken it, and I feel good about it.
Now, on to the next :)
